Thanks in part to the generous support of the Colorado Livestock Association, the 2025 Colorado Agriculture in the Classroom Literacy Project reached 47,716 students and teachers across 59 counties with the inspiring story of Dr. John Matsushima—his groundbreaking work in beef cattle nutrition and his courageous journey as a Japanese American during World War II.

This year’s program distributed 478 elementary kits and 165 middle/high school kits, engaging over 45,000 students in 2,600+ classrooms. Teachers praised the project for its meaningful content and real-life connections to Colorado agriculture:

“We are so happy to have our Literacy Project books and materials! What you do is fantastic! We are already looking forward to next year.”
— Kindergarten teachers, Sangre de Cristo Schools

“Thank you for such a wonderful lesson!! Our students loved learning about Mr. Matsushima. The lessons about him and his experiences during WWII were fantastic!! The students also loved learning about beef here in Colorado.”
— 5th grade teachers, Fruitvale

We are deeply grateful to CLA for helping us share Dr. Matsushima’s legacy and strengthen agricultural literacy across Colorado classrooms.
